Now that summer is in full-swing, you need to add some extra protection to your hair, especially if you've got extensions. Tape-in hair extensions give you the length and volume you want, without the bother of growing your own natural hair out. However, it's important to remember that the sun, and water can wreak havoc on your extensions if you're not careful. Here are four tips that will protect your extensions and keep them looking natural.

Go Ahead and Swim

If you're in to swimming, don't let your extensions stop you. There's nothing wrong with going swimming with your extensions in. In fact, you can hit the swimming pool, lakes, or even the ocean with extensions. You just need to take a few precautions to protect your extensions.

Use a Good Conditioner

Before you head into the water, give your hair a good conditioning treatment. Using conditioner on your extensions will protect them from damage.

Limit the Water Exposure

Going swimming is fine for your extensions. However, if you're going to have your head in the water for more than just a couple of hours, you should consider wearing a swim cap. Extended exposure to the water can damage your extensions.

Wash Your Hair Afterwards

Once you're done swimming, give your hair a thorough washing. Follow it with another application of conditioner.

Wear a Hat When You Go Outside in the Sun

If you're going to be out in the sun for a good portion of the day, it's a good idea to wear a hat. Direct sunlight can dry out your extensions and cause the tapes to deteriorate. Not only that, but a hat will protect your skin from sun exposure.

Use SPF Hair Products for Added Protection

Now that summer is here, check to make sure that the hair products you use contain SPF. If they don't, it's time to make a change. Using hair products that contain SPF will protect your extensions from sun damage and keep them looking shiny and vibrant. The SPF will also prevent your extensions from drying out.

Dry Your Hair Before Bed

If you wash your hair in the evening, be sure to let it dry thoroughly before heading to bed. Going to bed while your extensions are damp could damage the hair. Not only that, but going to bed with wet extensions could lead to foul odors and mold growth. The best way to avoid that is to either dry your hair thoroughly with a blow dryer before bed or wash your hair earlier in the day. It's important to note that the same rule applies if you take a late-night dip in the pool. Dry your hair thoroughly before heading to bed.
